Introduction to Photovoltaic Solar course
SUNCybernetics in conjunction with the Solar Training Center of South Africa's introductory course to photovoltaic (PV) solar presents a generic training module of learning on the possibilities of PV technology and using solar radiation as an energy source, the basic functionality of PV systems and the different types of applications and their potential for South Africa and the world. Day 1 - Introduction to PV solar
  • Electrical basics:
    What is electrical power, Current, Volts, kW, kWp, kWh, Amp hour, kVA, Power factor, Voc, Isc, VMppt, IMppt, Cable sizing (In layman terms)
  • Characteristics of solar energy:
    Irradiation, Radiation, Annual vs instant. Production over time, series and parallel connections, effect due to temperature, effect due to shading, effect due to time of year.
  • Basic PV solar system :
    Main components for a typical PV solar system. Most basic layout (Island/Off grid application- High level
The operation of an inverter and charger/MPPT (grid tied or victron MPPT)
  • Different types of inverters and chargers
  • Different types of batteries
  • Different types of modules
  • Different types of roofs/structures
  • How to differentiate
    between modules and batteries; Number of cycles, design lifetime, discharge rate, DoD. (Terms and definitions)
  • Site visit check list:
    Information gathering and measurements to do design and builds a PV solar system.
Day 2 - Design and system integration of PV solar
  • Interpretation of datasheets:
  • Datasheet for modules
  • Datasheet for batteries
  • Datasheet for inverters
  • Integration of PV solar components:
    MPPT operating range, MPPT size, Max vs design size, battery charging, circuit breakers, DC surge protection
  • Types of solar systems
  • PV solar system line diagrams
  • Understanding batteries:
    Installing, operating, maintaining and decommission batteries
  • PV solar plant inspection (on roof) :
    Identify and capture main components
  • Design PV solar systems:
    Off grid and Back-up
  • SMA solar design – Simulations training
  • PVsol solar design – Simulation training
  • PV solar installation – Lessons learnt
